Samsung P520 Armani Review

The Armani phone has style and substance
When early pictures of the Samsung P520 Armani phone were revealed, some critics dismissed it as an unimaginative response to the successful LG Prada phone. But on closer inspection the Armani phone proves to be better than first thought
The panel agrees that the device is superior to the Prada phone – which was arguably the benchmark in designer handsets before now
The positive reaction is partly because the functions exceed what is normally expected on a designer handset. The Armani phone boasts a 3.2-megapixel camera, an MP3 player, Edge capability, as well as a talktime of up to six hours.
But the real selling point is the one thing that really matters in fashion – its looks. ‘The design is excellent – it could sell on that alone,’ says the Carphone salesman. ‘It’s the most desirable phone on the market. The look is premium.’
The Phones 4u saleswoman agrees: ‘I really like the way it looks – the functions are not as good compared with the Viewty, but aesthetically it’s much better.’
Meanwhile, the Carphone saleswoman calls the handset ‘sexy’, and the Phones 4u salesman says, ‘it’s much better looking than the LG Prada’.
The consensus among the panel is that the Armani phone is not only more elegant looking than its LG rival, but is also better in terms of features.
The Phones 4u saleswoman says: ‘In comparison to the Prada, it’s quicker and has a better camera, with a much clearer picture quality.’
The Carphone saleswoman agrees that the Armani phone’s touch-screen is more responsive than the Prada’s. The Carphone salesman says it ‘blows the Prada out of the water’.
Another selling point is the box the handset comes in. The Carphone saleswoman explains: ‘It has some nice Armani extras in the box – plus it has the Armani scent when you first get it.’ The Phones 4u saleswoman agrees and the Phones 4u salesman adds: ‘The velvet box it comes in is a nice touch.’
The camera also exceeds expectations. ‘I wasn’t anticipating the camera to be 3.2 megapixels; people won’t buy the phone for that, so it’s a bonus.’
The Carphone saleswoman adds: ‘The camera doesn’t blur when you take a picture of something moving.’
Slow down
The panel could only find a few negatives with the handset. The Carphone salesman says the phone ‘runs slowly every so often’, and the Carphone saleswoman also had a couple of gripes. She said: ‘The most disappointing thing is that it doesn’t have video capability. Also, it would be handy if it was 3G.’
But overall, the panel agree that Samsung and Armani have collaborated strongly.
The Phones 4u saleswoman says the phone is ‘easy to use, nice looking and has a good touch-screen’. The handset is available for £500 Sim-free, or £45 per month on Orange, and the Phones 4u salesman calls the handset ‘excellent value for money’.
The Carphone Warehouse saleswoman describes it as ‘sexy’ and the Carphone salesman calls the device ‘a stylish phone for stylish people.’
